When the heart muscle is damaged, troponin is released into the bloodstream. A cardiac troponin test is used to diagnose a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to the heart is blocked, which can damage or kill heart muscle cells. Troponin levels start to rise within 3 to 6 hours after a heart attack and can remain elevated for up to 10 days. A cardiac troponin test can also be used to diagnose other conditions that can damage the heart muscle, such as: -- Myocarditis: This is an inflammation of the heart muscle. -- Cardiomyopathy: This is a disease of the heart muscle that can weaken the heart and make it difficult to pump blood. -- Heart valve disease: This is a condition that can damage the heart valves, which can interfere with the flow of blood through the heart.
