Elevated levels of microalbumin in the urine can indicate the following conditions or situations: -- Diabetic kidney disease: Microalbuminuria is often an early sign of kidney damage caused by diabetes (diabetic nephropathy). It can occur in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. -- Hypertensive nephropathy: High blood pressure (hypertension) can lead to kidney damage over time, and microalbuminuria is an early indicator of hypertensive nephropathy. -- Glomerular diseases: Certain kidney conditions affecting the glomeruli, such as glomerulonephritis, can cause increased urinary excretion of albumin. -- Cardiovascular disease risk: Microalbuminuria has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes, independent of other risk factors. -- Other kidney disorders: Microalbuminuria can be present in various kidney disorders, such as polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and lupus nephritis.
