Biomarker: Vitamin B12 Sample: BLOOD Results: 6 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10.00 Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is essential for nerve function, red blood cell production, and DNA synthesis. The test is primarily used to diagnose vitamin B12 deficiency, which can lead to anaemia and neurological problems. Symptoms Associated with Low Levels (Deficiency) : -- Anaemia: Characterized by fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations due to reduced red blood cell count or size. -- Neurological Symptoms: These can include numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, difficulty walking, muscle weakness, memory loss, disorientation, and in severe cases, dementia-like symptoms. -- Glossitis: A smooth, red tongue due to atrophy of the small bumps (papillae). -- Mouth Ulcers: Sores in the mouth or on the tongue. -- Vision Problems: Blurred or disturbed vision. -- Mood Changes: Depression, irritability, or changes in behaviour. Symptoms Associated with High Levels: High levels of vitamin B12 are generally not considered harmful as the body excretes excess through urine. However, elevated B12 levels might be indicative of: -- Liver Disease: Conditions like cirrhosis or hepatitis can increase B12 levels. -- Certain Myeloproliferative Disorders: Like chronic myeloid leukaemia or polycythaemia. -- Excessive Intake: Either through diet or supplements, though this rarely leads to symptoms unless there's an underlying condition. -- Kidney Failure: Can sometimes lead to elevated B12 levels due to reduced excretion.
