ProGRP Blood Test (Lung Cancer Marker)

The ProGRP Blood Test measures progastrin-releasing peptide (ProGRP), a precursor protein that is released by neuroendocrine cells and is most closely associated with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). It is used as a tumour marker to support the diagnosis, monitoring, and follow-up of patients with known or suspected SCLC, and it can also be raised in other neuroendocrine tumours. This test is typically requested by oncologists, respiratory physicians, or other specialists as part of a broader clinical assessment. It is not a general population screening test for lung cancer and should always be interpreted alongside imaging, histology, and the patient's full clinical picture.

The analysis is performed on a simple blood sample using an immunoassay method, which provides a quantitative measurement of ProGRP in the circulation.

Why it matters
ProGRP is a valuable complementary marker in the management of small cell lung cancer.
